Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
