No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
